The Chamber Minute 10/04/24
Rosey in for another Chamber Minute, Opposition to Measure 118 continues to grow as Oregonians learn about the damage this deeply flawed $6.8 Billion tax on the sale of goods and services would do to the state’s residents, businesses, economy and public services. Here are some key reasons to keep in mind: 1) Measure 118 is a tax on sales, not income or profit. This tax on gross sales applies whether a business makes a lot of money, has small margins or even loses money. 2) Prices will go up. There’s no such thing as free money. Consumers will pay for this massive tax through higher prices as confirmed by Oregon’s nonpartisan Legislative Revenue Office. 3) Measure 118 is a “tax on a tax.” Unlike a traditional sales tax that is added once at the final sale, Measure 118’s tax on sales could apply at every step of the supply chain. 4) Measure 118 makes Oregon businesses less competitive. Out-of-state farmers, manufacturers and others will have an immediate advantage because sales in their state won’t apply. 5) There’s no guarantee anyone gets their rebate. The legislature could amend this law at any time, use the money for something else, or […]
The Chamber Minute 09/25/24
Chamber Minute Hello everyone! It’s Rosey here with your latest Chamber Minute. We’re excited to keep you informed about the upcoming WBC Luncheon Forums featuring local candidates, along with valuable programs designed to support our businesses. We’re also taking a stand against Measure 118 in Salem! The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is committed to defending Oregon businesses. Measure 118 proposes an additional 3% tax on sales (not profits) for businesses with over $25 million in sales. This measure would impact approximately 2,400 businesses statewide, leading to increased prices for goods in Oregon and making our state less attractive for business. We urge you to join our campaign against Measure 118! Additionally, the Bay Area Chamber has voted to support the County’s efforts to pass Measure 6-217 this November. This measure involves a .69-cent tax aimed at maintaining our jail’s capacity at 98 beds. It has taken years to rebuild this capacity and hire the necessary officers, allowing us to implement essential consequences in the public safety sector. Notably, a .20-cent communication tax levy is set to expire this year, meaning the actual request is only .49 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. Please join us in voting YES on […]
The Chamber Minute 09/16/24
Sept 16, 2024 Chamber Minute with Rosey As we approach an important political season, the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce remains focused on our mission: supporting local businesses. We accomplish this through a variety of efforts—endorsing business-friendly candidates, keeping you informed about elections and local measures, and hosting networking events and advertising opportunities for Chamber members. By helping you stay informed and engaged, we strengthen our community and ensure Oregon thrives. Right now, it’s clear that passions are running high—both in positive and challenging ways. As a Chamber director, my priority is our members and the needs of the cities we serve. I encourage us all to pause and carefully consider how we react to the things happening around us. There will be plenty of issues that elicit strong feelings, but before responding, ask yourself: Is my reaction helping or hurting the issue, my community, or the organizations I represent? Standing up for what’s right is important, but there are ways to do so respectfully and thoughtfully. People will make mistakes along the way. Let’s keep our focus on solutions that benefit the community. While I understand the intensity of this season and how much depends on our leaders, we’ve […]
